Several dive operators offer deep sea night dives
(so called Black Water dives), for more experienced divers. I've not done one yet, as they're pretty new.
A great, easy & unusual dive is a short boat ride from the town of Kona to do an incredible night dive with
Manta rays. “Dive” perhaps is not the
right word. You drop down to the sea bed at about 33 ft/ 10 m
in a group and shine your lights upwards, which attracts the
plankton. Pretty soon, the Mantas (usually!) show up;
majestic creatures that pass within inches of your head as part of their "Cirque Du Soleil" performances.
You’re warned not to wear a snorkel as one of the Mantas
could easily catch it and take the mask off your face - yes, they come that
close to you! The biggest challenge for me was getting on the right boat afterwards!
Don’t miss this one if you’re in the neighborhood!
